Matty Matheson Marries Music & Food At Mattyfest

Canadian celebrity chef Matty Matheson never fails to provide his guests with an experience. He’s taking this philosophy to Mattyfest, the music and food festival he’s putting together and hosting at RBC Echo Beach on Saturday.

As a host on Vice’s Munchies, Matty Matheson shared his unfiltered and extravagant character with the world (and we loved it). The chef flavours everything he does with a hint of swearing and a lot of yelling, and his brand has become a staple of the Toronto food scene.

Is his “‘Guaranteed to get you laid’ Lasagna” recipe, which received over 5 million views, the best one there is? Maybe.

Is hearing the foul-mouthed chef yell about “the fucking good shit” for 10 minutes straight entertaining? Absolutely.

As for Mattyfest, merging music and food isn’t new for the chef. “I started Mattyfest years ago, in the basement of Parts & Labour,” he said in a video published on Facebook.

Parts & Labour, the Toronto institution where Matheson served as executive chef, regularly housed hardcore shows in its basement. The Mattyfest website calls it a “grassroot tradition” onto which the tatted-up chef is building the upcoming festival.

The festival will feature 21 restaurants, including some of Canada’s finest eats like Montreal’s Maison Publique and Toronto’s Buca.

“I’m bringing all of my restaurant buddies,” says Matheson in the Mattyfest promotional video.

Matty Matheson and his very own Maker Pizza, one of Toronto’s most popular pizza joint, will be in attendance alongside his pop-up burger shop, Matty’s Patty’s.

If you’re picky, however, make sure to show up at the event early. Mattyfest will operate on a sustainability policy, which entails each restaurant is expected to sell out so no food goes to waste at the end of the night.

On the music front, Mattyfest headlines with no other than the Wu-Tang Clan. This makes Mattyfest the only Canadian stop on the group’s 25th anniversary tour.

The lineup includes punk rock bands Gogol Bordello and Descendents, rapper Danny Brown, and Ontario natives like Metz and Luna Li.

Turnover, Jennifer Castle, Daniel Romano, Standing In The Corner, Chastity, Young Guv, Ruby Waters, and Dear-God will join them across two stages throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Tickets for the event are still available online, starting at $94 CAD. If you’re willing to pay a little extra, Mattyfest offers a VIP ticket. These include the regular exclusivities like viewing decks and flush toilets, but also grants you access to an exclusive BBQ event hosted by three American pit-masters: Billy Durney, Pat Martin, and Sam Jones

A few pack options are also available to bring friends and family along with you.

See you there!
